A 38-year-old man, Frank Mensah has been arrested for threatening to kill staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Mensah is alleged to have pulled a cutlass on the staff when they confronted him over power theft. He further threatened to kill them if they attempted to assess reading on the meter or arrest him.
The ECG personnel then reported the matter to the Police who later arrested Frank Mensah.
The Police have since held the man in custody and will soon arraign him on charges of stealing, interference and threat of death.
Speaking to Graphic Online, Ashanti Regional Revenue Protection Manager of ECG, Ishmael Oku, said his men detected the power theft in Frank Mensah’s house while they were on their usual revenue mobilisation rounds.
He said the personnel noticed that Mr. Mensah’s meter was off while his lights and other electrical gadgets were on.
According to Mr. Oku, Mr. Mensah upon realising that the personnel had detected his illegal connection, “went to pick a cutlass and threatened to slash the workers and asked them to leave the house’’.
He said the workers had to report to the Police after the incident who later effected the arrest.
Mr.Oku said power theft is one of the challenges facing the ECG in the region and has caused the company to lose lots of revenue.
He added that the company would use all legal means necessary to make culprits of power theft face the full rigours of the law and possibly be surcharged with the cost of the power stolen.
