The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) will, on Thursday, March 17, hold a public forum to discuss press freedom and attacks on journalists in the country.
The forum is on the theme, "Re-examining freedom of Expression, Ethics and Threats to the Safety of Journalists."
The event, which is scheduled to take place at the School’s North Dzorwulu campus at 10am, will gather key personalities from the fields of academia, civil society and the media, together with members of the public to re-examine threats to the safety of media personnel.
The panel members include the Head of the Communication Studies Department at GIJ, Dr Ebo Afful; the Director-General of Legal and Prosecutions for the Ghana Police Service, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye and the Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong.
It will be chaired by the Deputy Rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Prof Eric Opoku Mensah.
In an interaction with Myjoyonline.com ahead of the event, the Director of Research, Innovation and Development for GIJ, Dr Etse Sikanku, was hopeful the discussions would raise the necessary awareness and contribute to policy making at the national level.

“We believe it is important for all stakeholders to be part of this ongoing discussion. GIJ, as a research institution and as a journalism and communication training institute, is trying to drive the conversation and provide the platform for such discourse in order for us to find very equitable solutions to some of the major problems in the area of journalism practice in Ghana.”
“The aim of the forum is to bring stakeholders together for a more in-depth and participatory session to bring out the way forward for professional practice,” he said.
The forum is being organised by the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Development of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
It is being sponsored by, and will be broadcast live on Joy FM and JoyNews at 10:00am on March 17, 2022.
