Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor, has blamed the losses incurred by the Electricity Company Ghana, on government.
According to him, the losses incurred by ECG were 23percent at the time the erstwhile NDC was leaving office.
“How can you inherit losses of 23 percent, instead of reducing the losses or maintaining it , it has moved from 23 to 30 percent?” he asked.
Mr. Jinapor added that “that alone should send a message of failure to the government.”
His comment was in relation to ECG's proposal to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), requesting a 148% adjustment to cover the period 2019 and 2022. The ECG has subsequently proposed an average increase of 7.6% in tariff over the next four years to cover Distribution Service Charges (DSC).
The power distribution company attributed the high increase in the Distribution Service Charges to the gap that has developed over the years between the actual cost recovery tariff and the PURC approved tariffs as well as the cost of completed projects.
Speaking on Top Story on Tuesday, Mr Jinapor said ECG’s proposal should have been dealt with by government before the meeting with PURC.
Reacting to Mr Jinapor’s claim, the Deputy Energy Minister, Andrew Egyapa stated that government has engaged the management of the ECG and their case has been submitted to the PURC.
According to him, PURC is an independent body therefore whatever they decide on the proposed increment will be communicated to the public.
