Ghana defender, Maxwell Woledzi, organised a one-day football tournament, known as the Muslim Hijab Project Tournament, in Tamale on Thursday, June 22.
Ghana Women’s Premier League side, Pearlpia Ladies, emerged winners of the first edition of the tournament in Tamale.
The Vitoria Guimaraes man collaborated with Black stars assistant coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, with support from the Northern Regional Football Association to organise the competition for eight selected women teams.
The aim is to encourage and motivate Muslim young girls in the sport to play while still keeping to their Islamic religious values of being in the veil or head scurf.
Head coverings were distributed to all participating players and the winners of the tournament, Pearlpia Ladies, went home with a giant trophy.
The Northern Regional FA also supported the event with 10 cartons of drinking water and 1000 Ghana Cedis.
President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, passed through to share some words with the participating teams.
Maxwell Woledzi has organised similar tournaments in his native Nima since 2019. Sadat Anatu, a beneficiary, famously becoming the first lady to use a head covering in a Ghana Women's Premier League game.
