Former President John Mahama has lamented what he says is a new practice in the security services that has foisted a system of promotion based on an individual’s political inclination rather than on merit.
Speaking on the KSM Show, Mr Mahama said the new way of promoting officers is in contravention of the laid down procedure.
“If you go and ask people in the security services, promotions are no longer based on merit, they are based on your political inclination. These are things that weaken those services,” he said.
According to him, there is a need for the security services in the country to be efficient and professional.
When asked what structures can be put in place to achieve that, he doubted the likelihood of it ever happening.
This, he said, is due to government's decision to pack the institutions with partisan people.
“He [Akufo-Addo] has done it to the Electoral Commission, he sacked the commissioners and brought new commissioners. Recently he has appointed new commissioners who are known to have a background as NPP apparatchik, he doesn’t care,” he said.
