The National Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, says the claims made by the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, with regard to the purported plot by some persons get the current Inspector General of Police out of office do not represent the position or views of the party.
Richard Ahiagbah asserts that Mr. Naabu's comments are his personal views because he is not a party functionary.
“The confirmation of Bugri Naabu about all that stuff [leaked tape to oust IGP] is in no way, shape, size reflective of our party’s position. He may be engaging as a regular private citizen, a member of our party and former leader,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.
He, however, stated that the information he is providing the committee about the police service is something that should be considered and dealt with.
Later in a tweet on Saturday, September 2, Mr Ahiagbah urged the public to disassociate Mr Naabu’s actions and comments from the party.
“This is a small note to straighten my Professor, Ransford Gyampo's description of Mr. Bugri Naabu on TV3 Point Key.”
“Please Mr. Bugri Naabu is not a functionary of the NPP as claimed. Bugri Naabu is a private member of the NPP and a former Northern Regional Chairman of the party.”
“In other words, his position or view on national issues cannot represent the corporate position or views of the NPP,” he tweeted.
His assertion comes after Bugri Naabu appeared before the committee probing the alleged plot by some senior officers to oust the inspector General of Police, Dr Akuffo Dampare and authenticated the leaked audio.
The former Northern Regional Chair of the NPP also mentioned the names of some senior officers heard on the tape.
According to him, his motive for recording the contentious tape was for him to play it to President Akufo-Addo for him to make a decision, adding that he did not want his relationship with the President to be jeopardised.
In all, he noted that his decision was to safeguard the interest of the NPP.
“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know what they are saying, and it is either I don’t go to tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it and if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record, and I know the President I go and tell him something, and it turns not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” he said.
