Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC) Nana Akomea has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) should not completely rule out the possibility of conducting the limited voters’ registration exercise in Bawku.
According to the NPP member, there is still some possibility of brokering peace in the community; hence, the EC must be ready to proceed if the security situation improves.
"It is never too late to secure peace so if some provision has to be made for a few extra days [it must be done]," he said on JoyNews.
"Because you don't want to go and force something through and it will create security problems, then you would have regretted."
He was speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
"Let's urge all the parties to come to an agreement particularly because of the volatile security situation."
His comments come in the wake of the EC suspending the limited voter registration exercise due to tensions in the area.
Reports indicate that the suspension is a result of disagreements between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Upper East Regional Director of the Commission, Williams Obeng Darkwa, confirmed the incident to JoyNews.
However, he cited security concerns as the reason and refrained from commenting on what specifically went wrong.
Deputy EC Chairman, Eric Asare Bossman indicated that no alternative solution is available as of now.
On Friday, he told JoyNews that his outfit's priority currently is to protect the lives of its officials.
"If we get the green light from the two parties that they have come to an agreement and that there is a consensus that the registration should go on., the commission is ready. But based on the intelligence that we have from our regional director and other personnel in the region, it is not appropriate for us to continue the registration.
