The Chief Executive Officer of Jobberman Ghana, Hilda Nimo-Tieku, has noted that the trend of jobs in Ghana has changed due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
She said education, hospitality, and manufacturing were the leading sectors of employment opportunities before the pandemic.
However, the narrative, according to her on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, has changed, with the information technology (IT) and telecoms sectors topping the list of opportunities as most people worked remotely.
Speaking to the host, Roselyn Felli, on Wednesday, the CEO said, “After the pandemic, it was interesting because the kind of jobs changed. We used to have a lot of jobs in education, hospitality, and manufacturing, but after the pandemic, it changed to IT and telecoms.
"So, IT and telecoms became one of the top jobs because a lot of people were doing remote work. If you worked in hospitality, the hotels were closed. The trend of jobs changed to IT.”
Even though there are changes, Mrs Nimo-Tieku mentioned that opportunities in the education sector have returned to its initial state since schools have resumed, while other fields are still thriving to get back to its toes.
As to whether Jobberman Ghana is working on creating diversity for job seekers, she said the company has initiated a recruitment programme, which is sponsored by a German corporation, to create more employment for the youth.
“We’re currently running a programme that is sponsored by the German corporation and implemented by GIZ, and they’ve given us some funds to be able to do that,” she said.
But the project is geared towards enrolling more females in jobs, particularly in the technology field, as the employment rate of women is lower compared to males (68% for males and 32% for females).
Currently, some selected females are going through a four-week training programme, and the organisation is planning to place a minimum of sixty of the trainees in permanent jobs to enable them to find their relevance in the corporate world.
Despite Jobberman Ghana’s main objective of providing job opportunities, the CEO clarified that they support people with employability skills and prepare them for the job environment.
As Ghana’s leading jobs website, Mrs. Nimo-Tieku clarified that the company does not charge job seekers for giving them employment. She also said applications are free.
