The Paramount Chief of Awutu Bereku, Nai Abokuadi Wyettey Agyeman Otabil III, has appealed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama to prioritise job creation in his community if he wins the upcoming elections.
According to him, just like how the Kejetia Market constructed in Kumasi is an excellent location for doing business, the Kasoa area is a major food production hub which provides a significant portion of the country's food supply and deserves a grand market structure there as well.
“You constructed a beautiful building in Kumasi that is the Kejetia Market. If you get us some in Bodwease, Kasoa and Bontiase, we will be glad because this area is a food basket for this country.”
The Paramount Chief welcomed the idea of a 24-hour economy, but implored the former President to build 10 factories in his community to create more job opportunities as the youth are in search of jobs.
In response to the Chief’s plea, the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama revealed a policy to establish more industrial hubs in parts of the country.
“If you look at the developments in the country, they are mainly factories and industries which were started in Tema by Kwame Nkrumah. It was concentrated in the Eastern part that is Tema and the free zones area. Also on your way to Aflao, another industrial estate is being established but the Western part of the capital has a few industries which are old,” he said.
Speaking at the ‘Building Ghana Tour’ the former President was convinced that it is not feasible to concentrate all industries in one location, and that the government must expand industrialisation efforts across the country.
He revealed that the Member of Parliament for the area should look for available lands in the community so that it can be developed into industrial zones with social amenities.
“We have to start looking for lands so that we can build pharmaceutical factories, soap production factories, different factories, vegetable cooking oil factories and others.”
According to Mahama, the NDC will improve conditions in various markets across the country.
