The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has challenged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to fulfill his promise of scrapping the E-levy and other taxes without delay.
Mr. Mahama insists that if Dr. Bawumia is serious about his pledge, he would begin the process to fulfil them considering his significant role in the current government.
In January, the Vice President had promised to abolish the controversial E-Levy, so as to transition Ghana into a cashless economy.
“To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will therefore be abolished,” Dr Bawumia announced.
Again, the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP had pledged to eliminate other taxes including the VAT on electricity, the emissions tax, and the betting tax.
But speaking to members of GUTA on Tuesday, April 9, Mr. Mahama warned against placing blind faith in these assurances.
He called on GUTA to hold Dr. Bawumia accountable by pressing on him to eliminate certain nuisance taxes introduced by the current government.
“Tell Bawumia to eliminate the E-Levy and other taxes now, not later,” he said.
