The Black Stars recorded a second consecutive win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following their home victory against the Central African Republic (CAR) on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The Black Stars entered the game buoyed by their comeback win over Mali in Bamako on June 6, 2024. After opening the scoring with a penalty from Ayew just six minutes in, CAR took the lead at halftime following a brace from Louis Mafouta.
However, the Black Stars came back stronger in the second half, with two more goals from Ayew and another strike from Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, giving the team a 4-2 lead. Louis Mafouta then scored his third of the night directly from a free kick, ending the game 4-3.
Speaking after the game, Addo credited his team’s mental resilience and positive attitude for the comeback victory.
“The positive spirit. Despite being behind, away in Mali and now here again to come back from difficult situations that need to be mentioned. The mentality of the players to believe how I told them to play and to deliver. They are coming from all over Europe - with different coaching principles - but they were able to adapt and perform.”
He also emphasized the need for the team’s recent performances to become the standard for the national team going forward.
“This should be our standard - that second-half performance. But if we keep at it, the probability is that we can win a lot of matches and prolong this spell” he added.
The Black Stars have now moved to the top of Group I in the CAF World Cup qualifiers with nine points, three ahead of both Comoros and Madagascar, who will face Chad and Madagascar, respectively, on Tuesday, June 11.
