Chiefs and people of Nkroful say they have forgiven the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for the comments he made about Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah.
This was when NAPO as he is popularly known made a stop at Nkroful, the hometown of Osaagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah during his campaign tour in the Nzemaland.
During his unveiling in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserted that President Akufo-Addo has surpassed all previous Presidents in terms of development, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Following widespread condemnation, NAPO rendered an unqualified apology.
However, addressing a press conference, Nana Kwasi Kutuah V, speaking on behalf of the Nzema chiefs, insisted that he must personally apologize in Nkroful for denigrating the legacy of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The visit on Friday was therefore to officially apologise to the chiefs and to ask for their forgiveness.
He noted that, he didn’t mean to disrespect Dr. Nkrumah but his words were twisted and because of the backlash that came with it, the chiefs should forgive him.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh said that the NPP government has honoured Dr. Nkrumah’s memory by renovating his final resting place and therefore he can’t disrespect him in any way.
Speaking at the gathering, the chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua said that the apology was a step in the right direction, and that the apology has been accepted.
He called on NAPO and other political parties to use appropriate languages, when explaining their policies to the people.
