The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of playing a part in the current galamsey crisis.
He stated that the opposition party exploited illegal mining activities for political gain during the 2020 elections.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, September 17, Ahiagbah alleged that the NDC made promises during their campaign that encouraged illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, positioning themselves as a party that would "liberate" these operations if voted into power.
Mr Ahiagbah emphasised that the NDC's actions during that period contributed to the challenges the country is facing with illegal mining today.
He suggested that the crisis might have been even worse had the NDC won the 2020 election and delivered on these campaign promises.
He urged Ghanaians to be mindful of the role the NDC has played in the galamsey issue and stressed the importance of implementing strict measures to control illegal mining activities.
Mr Ahiagbah further called on the government and stakeholders to work together to combat galamsey and restore Ghana’s environmental resources.
“I think that the NDC cannot absolve itself of responsibility of where we are."
“You heard in 2020 when we were doing the election, they were leveraging galamsey as a means to winning the election. They were peddling galamsey to people telling them to vote for us when we come we will liberate you to do it,” he added.
