The vice chairman of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign team, Nana Akomea has condemned organisers and participants of the Democracy Hub protests that began on Friday, September 20, which sought to compel the government to take stronger actions against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The demonstration, however, descended into chaos, prompting the police to intervene with minimal force to restore order.
The police detained a number of protesters for allegedly disregarding warnings and engaged in vandalism near the 37 Military Hospital.
Protesters blocked the road, preventing commuters from passing, and their leader, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, reportedly removed keys from a police vehicle and threw them away, escalating tensions with law enforcement.
As a result of the degeneration, a good number of the protestors were taken into police custody and are facing prosecution.
In response to the incident, Nana Akomea, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the InterCity State Transport Corporation, praised the Ghana Police Service for their restraint amidst what he said were clear provocations.
He also commended them for successfully arresting the 'unruly protesters', emphasising the importance of maintaining law and order during such events.
"I am happy that the Police were restrained and calm for us to see the misbehaviour of the people during the demonstration."
"Is that how to do a demonstration? To block a hospital?"
