Joy Prime’s all-children TV show, 4Kids Paradise has taken a bold step in addressing one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental crises, illegal mining also known as galamsey.
The show launched the campaign dubbed 'Say No to Galamsey' on Saturday, September 28, 2024, specifically targeting schools and children to voice their concerns and suggest actionable solutions to the rampant destruction caused by illegal mining in the country.
The campaign was highlighted by an emotional segment featuring students from God's Grace International School, who wrote heartfelt letters to the President of Ghana. In their letters, the students shared their feelings about the devastating effects of 'galamsey' on their communities, natural resources, and future. They also proposed various solutions for curbing the menace, urging the government to take stronger legal action and implement sustainable practices to preserve the environment.

One of the presenters of 4Kids Paradise, Akosua Debrah further underscored the importance of the campaign by taking a tour of the Accra Zoo, shedding light on how illegal mining threatens not just human livelihoods but also the survival of wildlife. The tour, led by Mr. Samuel, an experienced zoo guide, revealed how the zoo mimics the natural habitats of animals in captivity, with the ultimate goal of reintroducing them into the wild. However, Mr. Samuel emphasized that the forests that serve as these animals’ natural homes are being irreparably damaged by illegal mining activities.

"The destruction of the forests due to galamsey doesn’t just affect humans," Mr. Samuel explained and furthered that "When the forests are gone, animals lose their natural habitats. Our conservation efforts at the zoo are directly threatened if there are no safe environments for these animals to return to."
The 4Kids Paradise’s 'Say No to Galamsey' campaign is not only an awareness initiative but also a call to action for the government and other stakeholders. The campaign's purpose is to stir the conscience of those involved in illegal mining and urge authorities to enforce stronger measures to end illegal mining before the damage becomes irreversible.
The children’s voices, in particular, were deeply emotional, reflecting the urgency of the situation and the long-term impact illegal mining could have on their future. Through their letters, the young participants made it clear that they are not only aware of the consequences of “Galamsey” but are also determined to play an active role in securing a healthier environment for themselves and future generations.
The 4Kids Paradise team hopes that this campaign will spark a broader national conversation and lead to decisive actions from those in power. The show continues to empower children to be active participants in critical conversations about the country’s future, using their platform to advocate for change and environmental preservation.
The battle against 'galamsey' continues
As the illegal mining crisis escalates, the efforts of children and youth, as demonstrated on 4Kids Paradise, serve as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in safeguarding the environment. The 'Say No to Galamsey' campaign is a powerful testament to how the next generation is already rising to the challenge, demanding that Ghana’s forests and natural heritage be protected.
With initiatives like this, the hope is that the government and citizens alike will respond to the urgent plea from Ghana's youngest voices and take immediate and lasting steps to combat illegal mining.
Stay tuned to 4Kids Paradise, every Saturday at 12 p.m with repeat on Mondays and Tuesdays 4:30 p.m on Joy Prime for more updates on the campaign and as they continue to raise awareness and inspire action for a better Ghana.
