The Deputy Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, has affirmed that Organised Labour remains determined to proceed with the indefinite strike scheduled for October 10, 2024.
According to him, the strike will only be called off if their demands, particularly regarding the cessation of illegal mining (galamsey), are met.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, October 1, Mr Otoo said "This strike declaration stands until our demands are fulfilled. Until galamsey is stopped, we will lay down our tools."
His statement follows Organised Labour’s earlier announcement of a nationwide strike in response to the government’s inaction on illegal mining.
During an emergency meeting, the group expressed frustration over the lack of decisive measures against the environmental damage and livelihood threats caused by galamsey.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) echoed similar concerns, hoping that the government would act swiftly before the strike to avoid unintended consequences.
"We are fully aware of the impact this action may have, but we also understand the long-term damage ongoing mining activities can cause. It’s better to bear the burden now on behalf of future generations," a UTAG representative added.
Mr Otoo further believes that the potential consequences of the strike will pressure the government to take necessary action.
