The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Adaklu in the Volta Region, Bright Nyatsikor, has stated that President Akufo-Addo has done all he can in the fight against the menace of illegal mining in the country.
Many stakeholders have mounted pressure on the Nana Addo government to put an end to illegal mining, which continues to destroy the country’s freshwater bodies, forests, and lands.
On his part, the Parliamentary Candidate argued that the president must not be blamed for the continuous illegal mining because “President Akufo Addo has been trying all he can to fight galamsey to the extent that in 2020 the NPP had to pay a painful prize because of the fight against galamsey” he told Myjoyonline.com in an interview following the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s five-day tour of the Volta Region.
He reiterated the need for a collective effort to end the activity, stating, “The issue of galamsey, the fight must be collective, those who are engaged in the galamsey themselves must be ready and willing to exercise and exhibit some level of patriotism for our dear nation Ghana, leaders must also be ready and willing to exercise same and exhibit same.”
Bright Nyatsikor, however, disagreed with the politicization of the fight against galamsey and emphasized that Nana Addo has done what he can as the president of the republic to address the issue.
“I see galamsey as a national security matter that all of us must come on board and address. We must as much as also resist the temptation and to politicise the fight against galamsey” he added. “The President Akufo-Addo government, we have done so well but the truth is that this fight cannot be won unilaterally.”
