The Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotey, has stated that the association intends to emulate how the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The use of VAR at the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire received worldwide commendation, with many describing it as efficient and the best use of the technology to date.
The GFA announced earlier this week that they were set to meet a FIFA delegation in Accra on Thursday and Friday to discuss the rollout of VAR in Ghana’s domestic leagues.
The two-day meeting, known as the VAR kick-off meeting, is crucial for FIFA's Implementation Assessment Approval Program, which is necessary for any member association adopting VAR.
“We agree that we can’t use VAR at all the league venues. It will be used for league matches that are broadcast live on television,” Kotey told Asempa FM.
“If you watched the previous Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, the VAR decisions were on point. That’s what we want to emulate.”
Alex Kotey and the GFA’s General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, were among the GFA delegation to attend the meeting.
