Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has expressed his admiration for veteran actor David Dontoh, citing him as a pivotal influence on his cultural identity.
Speaking with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Okyeame Kwame credited David Dontoh as a childhood inspiration for Ghanaian culture and heritage.
"Every time I thought of David Dontoh, I remembered how I idolised him without saying, seeing him in his Fugu, the way he speaks, his philosophy everything was so Ghanaian," he said.
He aspired to emulate Dontoh's cultural pride, stating that while growing up, he had always wanted his influence to be of a national fibre, just like David Dontoh.
Kwame also highlighted other factors that drive his passion for representing Ghanaian culture through fashion.
"I always try my best to put on something that is Ghanaian because it's my identity and stands out, for example, when I go for big events out of Ghana, I have to take Ghana with me," he noted.
He recalled his recent trip to Cape Town for the Earthshot Price Award 2024, hosted by the Prince of Wales, Prince William where his traditional kente attire made a lasting impression.
"When he saw me in my kente, he realised, 'man pass man, you have to represent'," Kwame indicated.
As the brand ambassador for 'Made in Ghana', Okyeame Kwame emphasised his genuine love for the country, unaffected by desires for recognition.
"I love Ghana because it is the right thing to do, and God has given me a voice and a face, and I want to use that to draw out nationalism," Kwame indicated.
By embracing his Ghanaian heritage, Okyeame Kwame aims to inspire younger generations to take pride in their cultural identity.
David Kwame Dontoh (born 1964) and affectionately called Uncle David, 'Ghanaman' and 'Kofi Abranteɛ '(Kofi Gentleman), is a veteran Ghanaian actor and television personality who has starred in numerous local and international films, drama, theatre and other stage productions.
