As part of efforts to ensure a peaceful election on December 7, the Ghana Police say they are ready to play a significant role.
According to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, the police will not tolerate any individual or group attempting to cause chaos during the election, as the service is fully prepared to tackle such actions.
He said, “Those who think they can come out making statements to intimidate or cause disruption, I want to tell them that life will become very uncomfortable for them, so they shouldn’t even try it.”
The IGP was speaking during a brief engagement with managers of media organisations in the country, particularly in the Greater Accra region, on Thursday,November 21.
Mr Dampare further noted that a 24-hour press centre will be set up at the Police Headquarters for journalists to have easy access to information about the election and also collect feeds from the public.
“We are establishing a National Election Security Taskforce Press Briefing Centre, and we will be sharing information at lightning speed,” he said, adding, “We are currently working with telcos to provide a dedicated number that will be used in this room. Wherever you find yourself, if there is a situation, you can call that number to get in touch with me directly.”
The Ghana Police Service is the primary provider of security for elections in the country, with support from other security agencies as needed.
