As the 2024 general election approaches, the collective commitment to peace and unity is more important than ever and cannot be overemphasised.

Together, Ghanaians can ensure a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful electoral process, as elections can significantly impact every sector of the country’s development and policies.

The Overall outcome of elections can shape all landscapes by influencing policy changes, including but not limited to labour, employment and trade issues, policies on funding and other incentives.

These were the words of a leading member of Wenchi Youth for Development, Evans Osei-Gyasi, during an interaction with JoyNews at the Bono regional town of Wenchi.

According to him, a strong democracy relies on the active participation of its citizens or the power of the people, so it is crucial to encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote and to do so peacefully.

“Our voices are powerful, and together, we can shape the future of our communities and the nation as a whole through our votes,” he noted.

He emphasised that rejecting violence is critical for sustainable development, and every Ghanaian must focus on standing together in rejecting any form of violence or intimidation before, during, and after the December 7 election.

He stated that resorting to threats and inciting supporters to embark on violence will not inure the peaceful accolade that the country is known for.

“By promoting non-violent actions and peaceful protests, we can ensure a safe environment for all, and violence may have no place in our society,” Mr Osei-Gyasi reiterated.

He said, "We cannot afford to lose our people through violence at this crucial election season as political parties are campaigning gruellingly for leadership positions and for constitutional power to govern”.

“Who are the people the supposed leaders will lead and govern if they lose all human lives through violence?” he queried.

Regarding media sensationalism, Mr Osei-Gyasi reminded all media houses and social media experts to avoid misinformation and disinformation tendencies to curb tension and violent issues or mayhems of any other form during this crucial time. 

He stated that Wenchi Youth for Development, as a youth group, will always uphold peace and call on other groups to join the advocacy for a violence-free election on December 7. 

“We are also reminding the political parties to eschew using ethnicity and chieftaincy to divide and manipulate voters while resisting the temptation of using money and material resources to influence the elections,” he stressed.

He urged all political actors to trust the electoral process since it is essential for a healthy democracy.

He added, “Let's support all efforts by the Electoral Commission to ensure transparency and accountability at every stage of the election process”.

He further advised Ghanaians to stand together with the strength that comes with dedication and solidarity on development motives by promoting peace and unity before, during, and after the 2024 general election.
