Pep Guardiola has admitted he might deserve to be sacked following Manchester City's 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield, marking the reigning champions' fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.
The defeat deepens City's worst run under Guardiola, whose side has now lost six of their last seven matches across all competitions.
As Liverpool fans taunted him with chants of “sacked in the morning,” Guardiola responded with a defiant gesture, holding up six fingers to signify the six league titles he has secured with City.
Speaking after the match, Guardiola reflected on the situation with both humour and realism.
“Maybe I deserve to be sacked, honestly, with our results,” he said. “Or maybe I’m still in the job because I’ve won six Premier Leagues and a lot of other titles. But I have to accept it; it’s part of the game.”
The Spaniard, who has previously been celebrated as one of the finest managers of his generation, admitted he didn’t expect such chants from the Anfield faithful, especially given the storied rivalry between the two clubs.
“I didn’t expect Anfield to start chanting that at 0-2,” he said.
“Maybe they should have done it at 0-1 when the game was still close, or maybe last season when we were dominating. But it’s fine. When you win, you laugh. When you lose, they laugh. That’s football.”
The loss not only highlights City's recent struggles but also raises questions about Guardiola's ability to turn things around amid a challenging season.
Despite the pressure, Guardiola remains proud of his achievements, reminding critics of his track record.
“I’m so proud of my six Premier Leagues against this team (Liverpool) and others,” he said. “But when the results are like this, I understand the criticism.”
