The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed confidence in the party’s ability to secure a decisive victory in the first round of the upcoming December general elections.
Speaking on Joy News' PM Express on Tuesday, December 3, Mr Kwetey dismissed the possibility of a runoff, affirming the NDC's optimism regarding its prospects in the presidential race.
“We are confident of a first-round win, but ultimately, the decision lies in the hands of the Ghanaian people,” Mr Kwetey stated.
While expressing hope for a favourable outcome, he acknowledged that the electorate holds the power to determine the final result.
Mr Kwetey also criticised the Electoral Commission (EC), led by Jean Mensa, for what he described as shortcomings in its performance.
He highlighted the delays in special voting for the Western and Eastern Regions as evidence of the Commission's challenges.
According to him, these setbacks raise questions about the EC's competence and ability to manage the electoral process efficiently.
“The EC, under Jean Mensa, has presented itself as the best in our history, but the evidence suggests otherwise. From issues of neutrality and independence to the recent postponement of special voting in two major regions, the Commission has not demonstrated it is on top of its job,” he remarked.
Drawing comparisons to previous EC chairs, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan and Charlotte Osei, Mr Kwetey expressed concerns over the leadership and competence of the current Commission, emphasising that these issues could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
