Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has once again ascended to the high office of Speaker of Parliament, making history as the leader of Ghana’s 9th Parliament under the Fourth Republic.
In his acceptance speech, Bagbin expressed deep gratitude, humility, and a renewed commitment to serving the nation and its legislative body.
A Historic Milestone
Bagbin began his speech by acknowledging the privilege and honour of being elected Speaker for a second consecutive term.
“It is with great humility that I accept the high and privileged office of the Speaker of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” he stated.
Reflecting on his political journey, Bagbin expressed gratitude to God and the members of Parliament who entrusted him with the role.
As Ghana’s longest-serving legislator, Bagbin highlighted the significance of his journey and experience.
“I came to the Speakership of the Eighth Parliament with my experience as the longest legislator of the House. I now come to the Ninth Parliament not only with that background but with the experience of four years of speakership in a very difficult hung parliament.”
Promise of Leadership and Collaboration
Bagbin pledged to draw on his vast legislative and leadership experience to guide the 9th Parliament effectively.
“I promise to bring all these experiences to bear in guiding this House to perform its mandate with efficiency, diligence, and above all, with a sense of being the bulwark of democracy in Ghana,” he assured.
Acknowledging the challenges that come with leading a diverse and politically charged Parliament, he emphasized the need for collaboration and unity among members.
“Honorable members, I am very grateful for the privilege and confidence you have reposed in me to be Speaker and to help this honourable House once more,” he said.
Call to the People of Ghana
Bagbin extended his message beyond the walls of Parliament, urging Ghanaians to engage actively with the legislative process.
“To the good people of Ghana who continue to hope for a better Ghana, I urge you to support your Parliament and be interested and engaged with the work of Parliament,” he appealed.
This call to action underscored his vision of a Parliament that is not only functional but also inclusive and responsive to the needs of the citizenry.
Bagbin highlighted his next immediate responsibilities, which included swearing in the newly elected Members of Parliament and overseeing the election of two Deputy Speakers.
He emphasised the importance of these duties, which reflect the core functions of Parliament in upholding democracy and governance.
As Bagbin assumes the role of Speaker for the second term, his speech reflected both a sense of continuity and a fresh commitment to navigating the complexities of parliamentary leadership.
His tenure comes with the weight of expectation to lead Ghana’s legislative body toward consensus-building and effective governance.
