High school students of the International Community School's (ICS) Accra campus have added their voice to the call for major stakeholders to help bring an end to the menace of illegal mining.
With illegal mining, posing serious threats to water bodies, forest reserves and farmlands, stakeholders have consistently stressed the need for the issue to be given critical attention.
The Ghana water company limited has been engaging in water rationing in some parts of Ghana because of the pollution of water at their treatment plants. Medical experts have also spoken about the rise in kidney cases and birth defects in mining areas, which has further highlighted the need for the issue to be given urgent attention.
It is in view of this that high school students from the ICS Performing Arts Society, led by Mr Eugene Kwarteng and Ms Betty Adu Gyamfi have staged a play to stress the need for Ghanaians to come up with a concerted effort in addressing this pressing issue.

To ensure inclusivity, the management of ICS, represented by Ms Ophelia Akom, deliberately chose to perform the play at the Nyamedua Children's Home, where the children at the facility were also enlightened about the effects of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The play, titled ASAASE REMEMBERS, written by playwright Naaana Yaa Ofosuaa Acheampong, mirrors society, where it uses the character of Kwaku Ananse to depict the issue of galamsey in Ghana.

The school's management believes that producing this play is a way of contributing to community development through advocacy.
Galamsey is a life-threatening poison to humanity and every Ghanaian should be concerned!
