Lucky Nwafor’s composure from the penalty spot handed Accra Lions a vital 1–0 victory over Medeama on Saturday, January 25, 2024, at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The win lifted Lions just above the relegation zone in the Ghana Premier League.
In a pulsating first half, it was goalkeeper Daniel Afful who kept Lions in the game with a string of outstanding saves.
Medeama's Prince Owusu unleashed a thunderous strike that seemed destined for the net, but Afful’s sharp reflexes saw him punch it away.
Moments later, he denied Richard Dwumah with another superb stop, frustrating the visitors as they pushed for an opener.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Accra Lions side taking the game to Medeama. Their persistence paid off when Youssif’s dangerous cross struck the hand of a Medeama defender in the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot.
Nwafor stepped up with confidence and calmly sent goalkeeper Felix Kyei the wrong way, putting Lions ahead.
Despite Medeama’s attempts to respond, Lions held firm to secure the three points. The result sees Accra Lions climb to 15th place on the league table with 16 points, while Medeama remain in 7th with 27 points.
This win offers a glimmer of hope for Lions as they continue their fight for survival in the Premier League.
