Title contenders Bibiani Gold Stars suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat at the hands of struggling Legon Cities at the Legon Sports Stadium in Accra.
Gold Stars entered the match as heavy favorites against a side that had been languishing in the relegation zone throughout the season.
It seemed like a classic David vs. Goliath clash pre game, but Frederick Akatuk had other plans, as his goal in the 52nd minute stunned the Bibiani side.
Despite coming up against the league leaders, Legon Cities displayed tremendous character and courage, dictating play and controlling the tempo of the game in the first half.
Gold Stars struggled to impose themselves as the Royals frustrated their efforts.
The hard work of Legon Cities paid off early in the second half when Akatuk capitalized on an opportunity to put the Royals ahead in the 52nd minute.
Bibiani Gold Stars fought hard to equalize, but their efforts were thwarted by a resolute Legon Cities defense, expertly marshaled by Joseph Amoah.
This important victory pushes Legon Cities up to 16th position in the league table with 17 points, while Bibiani Gold Stars drop to second place with 33 points.
