The state of road infrastructure in the Western Region has been a major concern for residents in recent years.
The poor state of the roads is largely worsened during the rainy season.
Consequently, the new Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has assured the chiefs and people of the region of the government’s commitment to remedy the situation.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, shortly after assuming office as Minister, Joseph Nelson mentioned a few of the road networks in the region, which he described as deplorable.
He said his administration would make road infrastructure one of the priorities of the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
"I have a fair view of how the situation is", he acknowledged whilst taking responsibility for dealing with the threats being posed on the roads.
"People travel, they see, they feel and know the state of the roads", the Minister noted.
The Minister said, "This government is committed to resolving them".
He cited the Cape Coast to Takoradi stretch as one of the important road infrastructures that must be tackled: "It is so important to me that we should immediately bring some relief to road users, bring some important changes on that stretch. I don't know when, but I am committed to it "he assured.
Joseph Nelson also mentioned the Nkroful junction in Takoradi as another aspect of road infrastructure in the region that requires attention.
He said aside from road infrastructure challenges, growing unemployment is another disturbing challenge facing the Western Region, which must be tackled tactfully.
