Learners at Akpafu Todzi Evangelical Presbyterian Junior High School in the Guan District of the Oti Region are studying under a weak mud structure, constructed in the post-colonial era.
The structure, believed to be about 6 decades old, has developed several cracks at different portions, with some of the wooden frame of the roofing and ceiling falling off.
Authorities have appealed for an immediate intervention to avert a catastrophe.
Akpafu Todzi was among the pioneering communities that benefited from schools established by the Bremen Mission.
This structure constructed with ancient architectural technology was the foundation classroom block for the community basic school.
The headmaster, Joseph Osafo explained that the structure was rehabilitated only once since its construction.

He said it is becoming a danger zone, threatening the lives of the learners who occupy it.
He said that due cracks at several portions of the building, with the corners suffering great damage, the school is closed down when rain looms, to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
“When you go inside, you will realise that the ceiling has been broken, and we support them with beams. The walls themselves are not in a good shape now”, he lamented.
Mr. Osafo appealed for a new classroom block to provide a safe environment for the learners and as well enhance academic activities.
The school is also handicapped in training learners in information and communication technology as it lacks the requisite logistics.
Mr. Osafo lamented that out of about 10 computers available to the school, only one is functioning and it is being used by the instructor.
“The world is moving from analog to digital now. So, you realise that almost everything you are doing, we go with the digital process. So, we need updated computers, the ones there are old and only one is functioning now”, he said.
