President John Dramani Mahama is set to swear in Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) today, Friday, 14th March, following the removal of Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office.
The decision signals a significant leadership transition within the Ghana Police Service, coming amid ongoing discussions about security sector reforms.
The dismissal of Dr Dampare was officially announced on Thursday, though no specific reasons were provided.
However, sources suggest that his removal forms part of a broader restructuring agenda aimed at reshaping the command and operational focus of the country’s security apparatus.
The development has sparked varied reactions, with some commending his tenure while others argue that leadership changes are necessary to align with the government's evolving security vision.
Dr Dampare, who was appointed as IGP in 2021, is widely acknowledged for implementing key policing reforms aimed at modernising the service.
His leadership prioritised public trust, accountability, and professional ethics, introducing policies that sought to strengthen internal discipline and enhance community engagement.
During his tenure, the Ghana Police Service introduced several innovative measures to bolster public confidence in law enforcement.
