The Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has revealed that he hosted the Ambassadors of Canada and the Netherlands in two separate meetings focused on strengthening mutual cooperation.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, April 5, the Minister described the engagements as “fruitful discussions about mutual interests,” adding that both nations expressed shared concerns on matters of peace, stability, and the environment.
Dr Boamah disclosed that a significant portion of the conversation centred on Ghana’s intensified efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as *galamsey*, which has contributed to the degradation of forest reserves and water bodies across the country.
“Winning the galamsey fight, restoring rivers,” he wrote, underscoring the government’s unwavering commitment to reversing environmental damage.
He praised the support and interest shown by both envoys, noting that Ghana values partnerships that are aligned with national priorities, particularly in areas of security and sustainable development.
“Our dialogue with the Ambassadors reaffirmed a shared vision for stability and environmental preservation, which is vital for the well-being of our citizens and future generations,” the Minister stated.
Dr Boamah further highlighted the Defence Ministry’s active role in supporting law enforcement efforts to root out illegal mining operations.
He assured that government collaboration with international partners remains a crucial pillar in achieving long-term success in protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring peace across the country.
