Kwan Pa band has emphasised the need for a generic name to represent all music forms that originate from Ghana.
Speaking on the E Vibes' Musical Band Series, the band suggested that highlife could serve as the umbrella term for all Ghanaian music genres.
Band leader Asah Nkansah explained that even older styles like palmwine music could be categorised under highlife, ensuring that Ghanaian music is distinctly recognised on the global stage.
“If we could have a generic name for music coming from Ghana. For instance, if we decide to pick highlife, let’s keep highlife as a the generic name for all the music type that comes from Ghana so that even if you are doing like palmwine music, though it is older than highlife, now we even say are doing palmwine highlife music.
So no matter the kind music we are doing, let's still put under the bigger umbrella- highlife so that highlife will be represented out there. Highlife is synonymous and when we mention highlife, we know it's Ghana. Like reggae, when we say reggae, Jamaica comes to mind but there are different types of reggae,” Asah said.
Kwan Pa believes in the assertion that Africa has a very rich music culture which is worth flaunting to the world.
Kwan Pa is known for performing a genre of African indigenous music called Palm Wine music which incorporates intricate but thrilling chords and various chord progressions on the Guitar and Seprewa (Indigenous harp-lute) all superimposed on different rhythms including Highlife and Adowa rhythms, etc, which are emphasized by additional percussions.
