Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have clashed with police at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, following the arrest and detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The scene turned chaotic when some party supporters attacked two police pickup trucks that arrived at the EOCO premises.
According to JoyNews correspondent Latif Iddrisu, the agitated crowd banged on the vehicles and attempted to block the movement of the police truck while entering the premises.
Scores of NPP faithful had gathered at the EOCO head office earlier in the day to demand the release of Wontumi.
Wontumi was intercepted by EOCO operatives shortly after honouring a police invitation at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in connection with ongoing investigations into alleged illegal mining activities.
Among them were senior party officials, including the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, and National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye.
