A tense scene unfolded at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, 2 June 2025, as supporters of New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Bernard Antwi Boasiako — popularly known as Chairman Wontumi — clashed with security officers while demanding his immediate release.
According to JoyNews, the confrontation began with a heated exchange between police personnel and some members of the growing crowd gathered outside EOCO’s Accra headquarters. The supporters were visibly agitated over Chairman Wontumi’s detention, which prompted an increasingly charged atmosphere.
The situation escalated when a group of demonstrators blocked the main access road leading to the EOCO offices. In a symbolic act of protest, 13 individuals sat firmly in the middle of the road, chanting: “Leave Chairman Wontumi Alone!” — disrupting vehicular movement and drawing further attention to their cause.
A brief scuffle between a police officer and one of the protestors briefly flared tempers, but security personnel appeared to exercise restraint to prevent a full-scale confrontation.
Despite repeated calls from security forces to disperse, the supporters remained adamant. “We won’t move until our chairman is freed. He has done nothing wrong,” one protester declared.
As of the latest update, Chairman Wontumi remains in custody, pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions. EOCO has yet to issue an official statement regarding the nature of the investigation or the reasons behind its continued detention.
