The Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol team successfully foiled an armed robbery attack on the Kumasi-Bibiani highway on Monday, 2nd June 2025, averting what could have been a harrowing incident for passengers.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. between Ahwerewa and Esaase, where five armed suspects had halted two Sprinter buses and were in the process of robbing passengers at gunpoint.
According to a press statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, 5th June, one of the suspects, armed with a pump-action gun, opened fire on the patrol team upon their arrival.

The officers responded swiftly and returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman.
“The suspect was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Afari Government Hospital,” the statement noted. The remaining four suspects managed to flee the scene and are currently on the run.
Police believe that some of the fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and are appealing to medical professionals to be vigilant.
“We urge all medical facilities and practitioners to report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station,” the Police Service urged. The body of the deceased suspect has since been deposited at the Afari Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigation.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has lauded the Nkawie Patrol team for their courage and prompt response.
“The bravery and professionalism exhibited by the patrol team is commendable and serves as a reminder of our commitment to public safety,” the statement concluded.
The police further called on the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by providing timely and relevant information.
