Ghana international Lawrence Agyekum has revealed a text from assistant coach Desmond Ofei gave him a hint about his first Black Stars call-up.
The 21-year-old was a late addition to the squad for the 2026 Word Cup Qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March following the unavailability of some midfield options.
According to the Cercle Brugge midfielder, he has been waiting for a call-up since the start of the year having become a regular at the Belgian outfit.
In an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, Agyekum narrated how a text from
Ofei gave him a clue of his national team career.
“I was really hoping I would get a call-up since the start of January. I had targeted the next international window. I was a bit concerned when the list came and I wasn’t in but it didn’t break me,” he recounted.
“Before training, I got a text from Desmond [Ofei] that I should call him when I’m done with training; that is where I knew there was something fishy. I knew I had been called when I saw the text.”
Agyekum went on to make his debut for the Black Stars during that window against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium and has since gone on to score his first goal for the senior national team during the Unity Cup game against Trinidad and Tobago.
