President John Mahama has announced that neglected portions of the Eastern Corridor road network are being prioritised under the government’s Big Push infrastructure initiative, with procurement processes already underway to return contractors to the site.
Speaking at the launch of the National Agribusiness Dialogue on Monday, July 28, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra, President Mahama underscored the strategic importance of the corridor to Ghana’s food production and national connectivity.
“The Eastern Corridor is a very important part of Ghana’s road network and it has been neglected for many years, even though the bulk of Ghana’s food production comes from that corridor—from the North East, Northern Region, through Oti and Northern Volta,” he said.
The Eastern Corridor, which stretches from Tema roundabout to Kulungugu in the Upper East Region, has seen major engineering work done in several areas. President Mahama highlighted completed sections between Gushegu and Oti Damanko, and from Nkwanta to Gyasikan.
However, he acknowledged that the segment between Oti Damanko and Nkwanta remains unfinished.
“I’m happy to inform you that they have been included in the Big Push, and as I speak, procurement is ongoing to get the contractors back to site to finish that segment,” he assured.
The President also provided updates on the Tema roundabout–Asutsuare segment, which is currently under construction. This includes a new bridge at Volivo, for which he had earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding during a presidential visit to Japan.
He disclosed plans to follow up on the agreement during his upcoming trip to Japan in August, where he hopes to engage with the Japanese Prime Minister to secure continued support.
“Once those segments are done, then it opens up the road and it will make it easier for food production to be transported down,” President Mahama added.
