Minister for Communications, Sam George, has revealed that 58 out of 64 radio stations previously shut down for regulatory breaches have written to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to regularise their operations.
The minister explained that although 210 stations were found to have defaulted on NCA regulations, only 64 were initially shut down; 6 of the affected firms have not approached the authority to correct their wrong.
"Let me say that, of the 64 radio stations, 58 of them have written to the NCA and started the process of regularising their paperwork," he said, speaking at the government’s Accountability Series on Friday, August 1.
Following the shutdown of these radio stations, President John Mahama intervened and asked for an amnesty to be granted to allow defaulters an opportunity to rectify their status.
The Ministry, following the president's intervention, granted a three-month amnesty.
The minister, however, issued a stern warning to the remaining stations that have yet to act, cautioning that any further infractions will attract sanctions without mercy or prior notice.
"We expect that the public sensitisation with the first batch of the 68 would have compelled others to take steps to rectify their anomaly,"
"For all those who have failed to take any step, there will be no public announcement on it; simply, there will be an enforcement in order to protect the public resource."
