The Ghana Police Service has categorically refuted reports alleging a police raid on the residence of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Bono East Regional Chairman in Techiman.
In a statement released on their official Facebook page on Saturday, August 2, the police dismissed the claim as "false", asserting they "have not undertaken any such raid."
Instead, the police confirmed an incident where officers from the Bono East Regional Police Command, acting on intelligence, responded swiftly to an active robbery in the early hours of Friday, August 1, 2025, at about 1:20 am.
According to preliminary investigations, officers intercepted suspects who were "spotted scaling a wall in an attempt to escape".
During this operation, one of the suspects, later identified as Seidu Bukari, sustained a gunshot wound.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention, but was subsequently pronounced dead, the police stated.
The police statement further revealed that the deceased, Seidu Bukari, was a "known member of a robbery gang that has been terrorising residents of Techiman and surrounding areas by stealing motorbikes and transporting them for resale in Kumasi."
He was also a wanted individual, having been "named as an accomplice in a similar case under investigation at the command."
Police investigations confirm that the gang had returned to Techiman on the night of the incident for a "similar operation when they were intercepted by the Police."
During the operation, the Police retrieved a motorbike and "other implements believed to have been used by the suspects during the robbery".
The law enforcement body revealed that a targeted manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who managed to flee the scene.
This ongoing police action highlights the persistent challenge of armed robbery and organised crime in regional capitals and their environs, particularly involving valuable assets like motorbikes.
According to police crime statistics, motorbike theft has seen a significant rise in some urban and peri-urban areas across Ghana in recent years, often linked to cross-regional resale networks.
Crucially, the police statement clarified that "Investigations later revealed that the affected house belonged to Mr. Ibrahim Baba Bukari, the NPP Regional Chairman for Bono East."
Given the sensitive nature of the incident, particularly its proximity to the residence of a high-ranking political figure and the fatality involved, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has taken immediate action.
A specialised team, comprising officers from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB), and the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters, has been deployed to the area.
This high-level deployment is intended to ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the entire matter, including the circumstances leading to the suspect's death and the conduct of the officers involved.
