The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed appreciation to the Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, and residents of Akwatia for ensuring a peaceful by-election on September 2, 2025.
In a statement signed by its Regional Chairman, Stephen Ampem Darko-Koranteng, the GJA lauded the Electoral Commission for the “professional organisation and management of the electoral process.”
The Association also commended the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies for safeguarding journalists before, during, and after the polls.
Political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were praised for demonstrating political maturity, while civil society groups, election observers, and the media were acknowledged for providing balanced and timely coverage.
The statement further thanked the people of Akwatia for turning out in large numbers to exercise their constitutional right in a peaceful and orderly manner, reinforcing Ghana’s image as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
The GJA pledged to continue promoting responsible journalism that upholds transparency, peace, and democratic consolidation.
The by-election was won by the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who secured 18,199 votes. His closest contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, garnered 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) obtained 82 votes.
