Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyepong, has admonished President John Mahama to make a conscious effort to promote local football in Ghana.
Speaking to Luv FM, the former broadcaster expressed disappointment in the lack of media coverage and attention given to Ghana's premier league, which he believes is in need of the government’s support for rebuilding.
“I'm so disappointed that the local league, whether it is you, the media, we are not giving it enough coverage or ventilation. People don't even know when there's a game going on. There's something wrong with our local football, and I think the government or the president should be deliberate about it. We should all work hard towards rebuilding it, and then there's a lot of competition because of DSTV and now the access to international football,” said Mr. Agyepong.
He highlighted the competition from international football broadcasts, which makes it difficult for local matches to attract patrons, hence the need to increase media coverage and promotion of the local football.
“When you are giving a fan a choice, paying GHS2 or GHS3 to go and watch DSTV, and then having to attend a match at the stadium, which is attained at cost, it's a very difficult choice, so there's a lot of pressure, but as Ghanaians, we should be deliberate about it,” he stated.
