Personnel from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS) have begun an intensive exercise to clear illegal miners from key forest reserves in the Ashanti Region.
On Tuesday, the team stormed the Desiree Forest Reserve in the Mankranso District, which was declared a high-risk area by the Forestry Commission about three months ago due to the presence of heavily armed mining gangs.
According to JoyNews' Erastus Asare Donkor, over 20 armed military personnel took part in the raid, burning and seizing several pieces of mining equipment.
At the same time, a similar operation is ongoing at the Anhwiafutu Forest Reserve in the Nkawie Forest District, also in the Ashanti Region.
This comes as authorities intensify efforts to reclaim degraded lands.
