Ghana’s under 12 boys’ tennis team have qualified for the 2025 African Junior Championship after winning the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) West Africa Zone tournament in Accra.
The competition, staged at the Goldcoast (Ghana) Tennis Club from 15–19 September, featured junior sides from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the hosts.
In the deciding boys’ tie against Benin, Jefter Dowouna lost the opening singles 6-2, 6-2 to Ivan before Maxwell Antwi levelled the contest with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Amge.
The pair then combined in the doubles to defeat Ivan and Amge 6-4, 6-3 and seal a 2-1 triumph for Ghana.
In the girls’ final, Nigeria proved too strong, beating Ghana 3-0. Atilota Mofifunowa defeated Grace Tetteh 6-1, 6-0, Opuene Karina overcame Emmanuella Williams 6-3, 6-0, before Karina and Rasaki Mabubat sealed the tie with a 6-1, 6-3 doubles win over Tetteh and Williams.
The final standings saw Ghana, Benin and Togo take the top three positions in the boys’ category, while Nigeria, Togo and Benin finished on the podium for the girls.
The Ghana Tennis Federation described the boys’ success as a major step for its junior development programme, with the team now set to defend the continental title the country claimed at the 2024 African Junior Championship in Mozambique.
