President John Dramani Mahama has praised the management of Ghana’s currency, saying the Cedi has regained respect both locally and internationally.
Speaking at the Cedi@60 commemoration by the Bank of Ghana in Accra, themed “Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” President Mahama commended the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance for their role in stabilising the nation’s currency.
“I just want to say that the governor and all your team at the BoG, the Ministry of Finance, Ghanaians are grateful to you for the management of our currency,” he said.
He emphasised the renewed confidence in the cedi, saying, “I think that a lot of respect has returned to our currency. And it’s my hope that you will keep whatever you are doing to make sure that we don’t have excess liquidity, all those words you people have; open market operations, whatever, those your technical jargons are,” President Mahama noted.
He encouraged the central bank and finance officials to maintain their efforts: “Whatever you are doing, continue doing so, so that the cedi is respected,” he said.
The Cedi@60 celebration marks six decades since Ghana introduced its national currency, replacing the Ghanaian Pound in 1965, a milestone symbolising the nation’s enduring pursuit of economic sovereignty and stability.
