Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu says the Akufo-Addo–Bawumia administration pushed Ghana into crisis because it failed to manage public funds with discipline.
The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP said fiscal recklessness defined the former government’s economic record and left the country burdened with unsustainable debt.
Speaking on PM Express on Tuesday, he argued that the current administration’s performance is anchored on strict spending control.
“What has defined the performance of this government is discipline, fiscal discipline,” he said.
He added that the same principle applies to private life. “Even in our own lives, if you live beyond your means, you’re always going to be in debt.”
The MP insisted that the New Patriotic Party government failed that basic test.
“Everybody knows that the problem of the NPP, admittedly, governments before them have also had that problem, was that they were indisciplined as far as the fiscal management of the Ghanaian economy was concerned,” he said.
His comments come as debates about Ghana’s fiscal direction continue to dominate public conversation.
Critics of the Akufo-Addo–Bawumia era have long pointed to excessive borrowing, unchecked expenditure, and weak controls as the roots of Ghana’s economic collapse.
Supporters of the former administration have blamed external shocks. But Kwakye Ofosu maintained that the core problem was internal and avoidable.
The issue remains central to Ghana’s recovery efforts, especially as the government seeks to assure the public that tighter controls will prevent a repeat of past failures.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said fiscal restraint is now at the heart of policy actions designed to restore confidence, stabilise the cedi, and rebuild credibility with international partners.
