The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed concern over the widespread use of non-standard English among candidates in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Mr John Kapi, Director of Public Affairs at WAEC, explained that many students relied on English expressions commonly found on social media rather than standard English.
"There was also the issue of the usage of social media diction and paging in English Language," Mr Kapi mentioned when discussing the outcome of the exams on JoyFM's Super Morning Show on Tuesday, December 2.
He gave an example saying, "When we are communicating among ourselves, I want to say, I know right, so I will just write Ikr. And you will understand that, and I will also understand that, so that is the kind of slang (the candidates use)"
"We wouldn't want to use that in standard language," he added.
