The Obuasi Divisional Police Command has arrested 25 persons in an operation targeting criminal activities across parts of the municipality.
The arrests were carried out by a team led by the Obuasi Divisional Operations Commander, ASP Robert Adommbila Apelkiwine, in areas including Kofekrom, Gawasu, Bedieso, Kyekyewere and Dadwen.
Of the suspects, 21 are males and four are females.
Speaking to Adom News at the Central Police Station in Obuasi, ASP Apelkiwine said the suspects arrested were allegedly involved in the sale of substances believed to be marijuana and tramadol, among other illegal activities.
He added that the operation, which began last week, was aimed at ensuring peace and security during the Christmas festivities.
“During festive periods, some individuals take advantage to engage in criminal activities and harm others. We decided that such acts would not be allowed this season. We therefore moved into known ghettos to clamp down on those involved in crime, including the sale of tramadol and marijuana,” he said.
According to him, some of the suspects were arrested in possession of firearms. Although they claimed to have licences, they failed to produce valid documentation.
ASP Apelkiwine further disclosed that three of the female suspects were arrested for allegedly operating brothels, which is against the law, while the fourth was picked up for selling marijuana.
He assured residents that the police will intensify patrols and operations to ensure calm and security, particularly on the night of December 31, to prevent robberies while residents attend church services.
“We want to ensure that Obuasi residents can celebrate and attend church on the 31st night without fear,” he added.
