The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, is making a passionate appeal to shoppers and consumers to insist on Value Added Tax (VAT) receipts at all times whenever they make purchases.
According to him, this will help consumers know the right taxes paid and hence enjoy the benefit.
Speaking to Journalists after visiting some shops and malls to ascertain the compliance with the new VAT, the Commissioner-General is positive that this will support national development and promote accountability.
“We call on shop owners, businesses to comply voluntarily with the new VAT law so that people can benefit from the reduction and cancellation of the COVID-19 levy. I will also appeal to shoppers and consumers to insist on a VAT receipt because that is the only way you can check whether the right taxes are being charged on the items you purchase and thereby supporting economic growth", she explained.
"We must all try to pay the right taxes so government can get the revenue to support its initiatives and create jobs for more Ghanaians,” he said.

A team of officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority visited some shops and supermarkets in Accra to assess the implementation of the new VAT system, which commenced on January 1, 2026.
During the visit, the managements of Melcom, Palace Mall and other Supermarkets confirmed that the implementation of the new VAT has resulted in reduction of prices.
The Commissioner-General of the GRA used the occasion to call on customers to demand their VAT receipt and ensure that they benefit from the new VAT rate.
