A political aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dismissed suggestions that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is rooting for President John Mahama’s failure in order to regain power.
According to Kofi Tonto, the NPP welcomes recent improvements in key economic indicators under the Mahama administration, including easing inflation, appreciation of the cedi, and reductions in fuel prices, noting that these gains benefit all Ghanaians.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, he stressed that the party’s political fortunes are not dependent on the government’s collapse.
“We are happy, because as the NPP, we don’t need President Mahama to fail for us to come back to power. Ghanaians don't think in a binary way, that one has to fail for the other to succeed,” he said.
Mr Tonto argued that national progress must take precedence over partisan interests, insisting that the country cannot afford stagnation for political advantage.
“President Mahama can be successful. In fact, he must be successful for the benefit of all of us. Ghana cannot continue to lag behind. As a political party, we have no interest in wishing bad for President Mahama,” he added.
He further maintained that even if the President records successes, voters still retain the right to choose a different leadership direction in future elections.
“We want him to succeed because we believe that even in the face of his success, Ghanaians can still decide that, although you’ve done well, going forward we need a leader whose vision transcends the ordinary,” Mr Tonto said.
