Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah, former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, has rejected calls for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to field Dr Mahamudu Bawumia again as its presidential candidate in the party’s internal election scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Dr Assibey-Yeboah argued that the party should prioritise performance and electoral prospects over loyalty to a past candidate.
He said the 2024 presidential election results indicate the need for fresh leadership within the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“How many chances should we give him? President John Dramani Mahama has contested four elections; he won two. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ran three times and won twice. The late former President John Atta-Mills also contested three times. Are we giving him this chance and another chance? I’m not looking at chances; I want to win the elections in 2028,” he said.
Dr Assibey-Yeboah emphasised that the NPP should be prepared to field a new candidate and assess performance based on results.
He spoke on Channel One TV.
“The need is to field a new candidate, and if the candidate doesn’t perform, they drop him,” he added.
He concluded that the party’s primary goal should be to select a candidate with the strongest prospects of victory, warning that past performance should guide decisions rather than sentiment or precedent.
